On the morning of February 29, the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province, in coordination with the Ministry of Construction, held a conference to officially announce the Master Plan for Phu Quoc City through 2040.

Four strategic pillars for Phu Quoc’s Development

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nghi, Minister of Construction, emphasized that Phu Quoc is  Vietnam’s first island city. To date, it has achieved Class II urban status and has emerged as a dynamic city that strongly appeals to tourists. Each year, Phu Quoc records total budget revenues exceeding 7000 billion VND.

However, the Minister also acknowledged existing challenges that must be addressed, including: economic development that has yet to fully match the island’s vast potential and advantages; uneven infrastructure quality with localized flooding; and persistent limitations in wastewater and solid waste treatment.

The newly approved master plan is built upon four key development strategies: Preserving and enhancing natural resources and distinctive local cultural values; leveraging island and maritime advantages to foster a robust marine-based economy; developing a distinctive island maritime urban model; advancing Phú Quốc as a national tourism hub of international standing.

“This master plan serves as a critically important legal foundation for Kiên Giang Province to attract investment and implement urban development programs, ensuring sustainable socio-economic growth and environmental protection for Phú Quốc,” Minister Nguyễn Thanh Nghị stressed.

Monthly Events to Stimulate Tourism Demand

According to Mr. Huynh Quang Hung, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Phu Quoc City, in recent years the island has attracted major tourism investors such as Vingroup, Sun Group, and BIM Group. At the same time, global tourism trends increasingly favor island and coastal destinations.

Phu Quoc will continue to innovate, enhance service quality, and fully tap into its maritime and island advantages to better serve both domestic and international visitors.

Mr. Hung noted that the city is working closely with relevant agencies to promote Phu Quoc’s tourism image, organize a wide range of cultural and sporting events, and implement plans to host at least one major event every month to stimulate demand and attract visitors.

Mr. Le Quoc Anh, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Kien Giang Province, stated:
“The announcement of the Master Plan for Phu Quoc City through 2040 presents a valuable opportunity to promote and showcase the city’s new development values—comprehensive, balanced, and sustainable growth that harmonizes economic development with environmental protection, preservation of historical and cultural heritage, and the assurance of national defense and security.”

Ensuring Harmonized Common Interests
Under the Master Plan to 2040, Phu Quoc is envisioned as a distinctive island maritime city, featuring regional- and international-scale centers for commerce, services, healthcare, and high-tech wellness and rehabilitation.

The city will develop under a multi-center urban model, forming a chain of concentrated urban areas and serving as a hub for regional transportation, seaports, and an international airport. The total urban population is projected to reach approximately 680,000 people by 2040.

Phu Quoc will be strategically divided into 13 economic development zones to ensure harmonized common interests, including: Duong Dong area, Bai Truong area, Ong Lang – Cua Can area, Bai Vong area, Bai Sao area, An Thoi Area, Vinh Dam area, Bai Khem – Mui Ong Doi area, Eastern coastal area (Bai Thom Commune), Northern coastal area (Ganh Dau Commune), Northwestern coastal area, Southern An Thoi Archipelago, Tho Chu Island area
